Andrea Kimi Antonelli has described sitting in Ayrton Senna’s Lotus as an “unforgettable day” after meeting members of the late Brazilian driver’s family in São Paulo. The Mercedes driver shared a photo on social media showing him in the cockpit, surrounded by Senna’s relatives, and thanked the family for welcoming him.
“Thank you to the whole Senna family,” Antonelli wrote in Portuguese. He added that it might take him some time to fully take in the experience, but that he would carry the memories with him forever.
Antonelli is a longtime Senna fan and also races with the number 12. After winning in Mexico City, he travelled to Brazil ahead of the next Formula 1 round, scheduled for Sunday, and took the opportunity to pay tribute to his idol.
Last year, Antonelli visited Senna’s grave in São Paulo wearing Brazil’s colours and brought a bouquet of flowers.
