Arsenal secured a vital 1-0 victory at Liverpool after Kai Havertz converted from close range, earning Mikel Arteta’s side a statement win at Anfield and reinforcing their position as the Premier League team to beat.
Havertz’s goal, his first in 10 appearances, came after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson misplaced a short pass towards Jérémy Jacquet. Martin Ødegaard intercepted, Arsenal moved the ball quickly up the right and Declan Rice delivered a low cross across the six-yard area, where Havertz finished from close range.
Liverpool responded with energy but were unable to turn their pressure into a goal. Alexis Mac Allister headed wide from a promising position in the 43rd minute, while Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar with a free-kick. Liverpool also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty after Jurriën Timber pulled Alexander Isak’s shirt in the area.
Arsenal created opportunities on the counterattack, with Havertz narrowly missing a touch to a Bruno Guimarães delivery and Martin Ødegaard unable to react to another opening. After taking the lead, Arteta’s team focused on controlling the match and limiting Liverpool’s attacking options.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola introduced Dominik Szoboszlai for Trey Nyoni in the 59th minute as the home side searched for a response. However, Arsenal grew more assured as the second half progressed. Christos Tzolis forced a strong save from Alisson, and Jérémy Jacquet recovered well to prevent another Arsenal chance after slipping in the 68th minute.
Frustration grew among Liverpool’s players and supporters as Arsenal won a series of free-kicks. Virgil van Dijk was booked after the final whistle for sarcastically applauding referee Andy Madley, while Mac Allister also became involved in a confrontation with Noni Madueke.
Liverpool’s five-match winning streak in all competitions came to an end as they struggled to find a decisive opening. Arsenal, meanwhile, protected their narrow advantage with a disciplined display and left Anfield with a significant victory in their bid to retain the league title.
