Australia will rest Test captain Pat Cummins and fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood for the upcoming three one-day internationals and five T20 internationals against England. The trio were not named in either squad on Monday as they refresh for a summer workload of 10 Tests in 14 weeks. Mitchell Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides.
Selectors are also managing Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Josh Inglis, Cooper Connolly and all-rounder Cameron Green through the T20 series after long tours to Zimbabwe and South Africa. The players are being prepared for four Tests against New Zealand and five in India.
Chair of selectors George Bailey said Australia was in a demanding phase of its schedule. He said multi-format players were moving directly from the South Africa tour into an ODI and T20 series, leaving a narrow window to make sure the squad was physically prepared and fresh for the New Zealand Test series. Bailey added that from the Test players assembling in Perth to the end of the 150th anniversary Test against England, the team would have been on the road for more than 100 days. Each player's build-up to the New Zealand series would be carefully planned around physical and mental preparation, he said.
Western Australia paceman Mahli Beardman is set to make his national ODI debut after playing one T20 for Australia. Bailey said Beardman's recent performances for Australia A were impressive and that selectors were excited about his return to the national team across the ODI and T20 formats, believing he can develop into an all-format player. Jack Edwards was included in both squads after an impressive tour of South Africa and consistent domestic form. Left-arm quick Spencer Johnson and all-rounder Liam Scott return to the ODI squad, while Nathan Ellis was not recovered in time for the ODI series as he returns from a side strain.
Tim David, recently crowned Australian T20 player of the year, will spearhead the T20 squad. Jake Fraser-McGurk has won back a place in Australia's T20 team for the first time since 2025, and young NSW batter Lachlan Shaw joins the T20 squad for the first time after impressing on the recent Australia A tour to India and in the BBL. The ODI side continues to build towards Australia's 2027 World Cup defence in Africa, while the T20 squad has longer-term goals of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and T20 World Cup.
