A controversial refereeing decision during Como’s match against Venezia has led to sexist abuse directed at Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, both on social media and from the stands at Como’s Sinigaglia stadium. The abuse was also clearly audible during DAZN’s television coverage.

The incident occurred in the 28th minute, with the score still 0-0. Como player Luis Milla appeared to handle the ball, prompting Ferrieri Caputi to award Venezia a penalty. After being called to the monitor by the VAR team, consisting of Cosso and Giua, she reversed the decision and withdrew the spot kick.

The decision drew strong criticism online from Venezia supporters and other users, with some of the comments explicitly targeting the referee because she is a woman. The insults heard during the match were not limited to reactions to the penalty incident.

Daniele Orsato, the refereeing designator, watched the game from the stadium’s main stand. He appeared displeased by the decision over the penalty, while the sexist abuse continued to be heard during the match.
