Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean has died at 34 from intestinal cancer. Her family announced her death in a post on Instagram on Sunday, November 1.

Mageean won the European 1,500m title in Rome in 2024, finishing ahead of Britain’s Georgia Hunter-Bell. She represented Ireland at the 2016 and 2021 Olympic Games.

She announced in July 2025 that she had been diagnosed with cancer and later said the disease was at an advanced stage. Mageean wrote a book about her experience, titled “My Greatest Race,” published in the Northern Hemisphere summer of 2026.

The Irish Olympic Committee paid tribute to Mageean, saying the country had lost a hero. World Athletics also expressed its shock, describing her as a fighter on and off the track who had inspired many people.
