Everton defeated Newcastle 1-0 at St James’ Park, with Thierno Barry scoring in the second half after goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek failed to hold Tyrique George’s shot. Newcastle finished with 10 players after Jacob Ramsey was sent off in stoppage time for two yellow cards.

The result was Newcastle’s second defeat in five days, following a 3-1 loss to Everton in the Carabao Cup. The home side struggled to create clear chances, and supporters again expressed their dissatisfaction at the final whistle as questions remained over Matthias Jaissle’s team.

The first half was scrappy, with neither side testing the opposing goalkeeper seriously. Everton’s Jake O’Brien and Harrison Armstrong both shot wide, while Newcastle’s Harvey Barnes threatened from the left without making the most of his opportunities.

Everton took the lead early in the second half. George’s effort slipped beneath Hornicek, allowing Barry to tap into an unguarded net. Newcastle pushed for an equaliser, and Barnes later set up Anthony Elanga at the far post, but the ball did not fully cross the goal line before Everton cleared it.

Newcastle’s late attempts were limited as Everton pressed and threatened on the counterattack. Ramsey’s dismissal further reduced the home team’s chances of finding a way back into the match.

Everton were again without Jack Grealish, who remained out of the squad after missing a training session without permission. David Moyes did welcome back defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who had missed two matches while following concussion protocols.

Jaissle is under early pressure after a difficult start to his tenure. Newcastle’s summer departures included Bruno Guimarães, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Kieran Trippier, while Jaissle arrived late in the process. The club’s supporters will be looking for improvement as the team faces a challenging winter.
