Alan Jones, the Australian driver who won the Formula One world championship with Williams in 1980, has died at the age of 80 after a brief illness, local media reported.

Jones won 12 Grands Prix during his career. Alongside Jack Brabham, he was one of only two Australians to claim the Formula One world title.

A statement issued on behalf of his wife, Amanda Butler-Davis, said the family was deeply saddened by his death. It added that Jones would be missed by those closest to him and remembered by his fans, whose support he had always appreciated.

The statement also said Jones had devoted his life to motorsport and left a lasting legacy through his achievements, passion and distinctive character, both on and off the track.
