The future stadium of Inter and AC Milan is expected to be built in 2031 or 2032 next to the remains of the Giuseppe-Meazza stadium, better known as San Siro. Its presentation on Thursday, October 29, effectively marks the planned destruction of a landmark of European football.
The project has drawn criticism because the existing stadium is still considered suitable for matches and carries major historical significance for Milan. Gianni Rivera, the Rossoneri legend, told La Repubblica that San Siro remains a monument to the city and questioned the need to replace it with a new venue.
Several previous stadium proposals had failed, including amid municipal efforts to protect the heritage value of the old ground. The new project is now set to proceed by leaving that history behind.
San Siro was built in 1926 and expanded three decades later with a second tier of stands designed by architect Armando Ronca. That work introduced the stadium’s distinctive spiral access ramps. A third tier and a roof with red beams were added ahead of the 1990 World Cup, completing its recognizable brutalist appearance.
