Kimi Antonelli has been crowned Formula 1 world champion at just 20, becoming the youngest driver to win the title and bringing an Italian driver back to the top of the sport. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the achievement as a source of national pride, praising Antonelli’s talent, commitment, determination and dedication.

Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said Antonelli’s victory had placed Italy “once again at the centre of the world.” He noted that Antonelli is the youngest world champion and the first Italian to win the Formula 1 championship since Alberto Ascari, 73 years ago. Abodi also highlighted the driver’s talent, determination and composure, saying his success would remain in the nation’s memory.

Singer Vasco Rossi congratulated the Mercedes driver on social media, calling him “genial,” “extraordinary” and “incredible.” Rossi also celebrated Antonelli’s Italian and Emilian roots, describing him as a 20-year-old from Casalecchio.

MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi said Antonelli’s achievement had moved him deeply. Speaking to Sky Sport, he praised the driver’s performance and said much of Mercedes’ championship campaign had been down to Antonelli, despite the team not dominating the season. Rossi added that Antonelli could become one of the strongest drivers in Formula 1 history and said he enjoyed drawing comparisons between them.

Aprilia MotoGP rider Marco Bezzecchi also congratulated Antonelli, saying he was looking forward to embracing his friend. Bezzecchi praised the new champion for handling the pressure with the calmness of a true champion.
