Kylian Mbappé responded to a difficult week by scoring a penalty in Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory away to Racing Santander on Sunday. Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomandé also found the net as Madrid recorded a sixth consecutive win in all competitions.
Mbappé had narrowly missed out on the Ballon d’Or to Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane before apologising over a social media controversy involving a video joke about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. Real Madrid’s match, along with other Spanish fixtures this weekend, was not broadcast on Chinese state television following the fallout.
The result kept third-placed Real Madrid within three points of La Liga leaders Barcelona, who defeated Alavés 6-1 on Saturday. Madrid are also one point behind Atlético Madrid, who beat Levante 2-0.
Real Sociedad’s four-match winning run ended with a 2-1 defeat by Athletic Bilbao. Inaki Williams and Alex Berenguer scored in the first half, with Berenguer converting a penalty.
In Serie A, Lazio came from behind to beat Cagliari 2-1 and move ahead of Inter at the top of the table. Cagliari took the lead through M’Bala Nzola in the 20th minute, but Gustav Isaksen and Andrea Pinamonti scored in the two halves to give Lazio a sixth successive league victory.
Como returned to the top four after beating bottom side Venezia 1-0 for their fifth consecutive win in all competitions. Captain Lucas Da Cunha scored the decisive penalty in the 43rd minute.
Juventus also returned to winning form, defeating 10-man Napoli 2-0. Kerim Alajbegovic and Jeremie Boga scored after half-time, while Napoli’s Luca Marianucci was sent off.
In Ligue 1, Lyon and Paris FC won to close the gap on leaders Paris Saint-Germain. Lyon beat Angers 2-0 through goals from Ernest Nuamah and Corentin Tolisso, moving to third, three points behind PSG and one behind Lille.
Lyon’s victory came amid reports that coach Paulo Fonseca could leave to return to Portugal. Paris FC moved into fourth place after defeating Monaco 3-1, with Lassine Sinayoko scoring twice late in the first half before Folarin Balogun pulled one back in the 65th minute.
