Jack Grealish can still have a future at Everton, manager David Moyes says, though he is unsure when the midfielder might return to the team. The 31-year-old missed both of Everton’s wins over Newcastle in the past week following a disciplinary issue.

Grealish, on loan from Manchester City, was left out of Thursday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory after what was believed to be an unauthorised absence from training. He also missed Monday’s Premier League match, in which Thierno Barry scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at St James’ Park. Everton said Grealish was unavailable because of a lack of fitness.

Asked about his status after Monday’s match, Moyes told BBC Sport that Grealish was unavailable and that the club would decide when he could return. He declined to say whether the absence was specifically fitness-related or whether the disciplinary matter had been resolved.

Everton are due to host Coventry on Friday at 20:00 GMT, but Moyes could not confirm whether Grealish would be available. Asked if the player had a way back at the club, he replied: “Of course there is.”

Grealish is seeking to revive his career at Everton after losing his place at Manchester City, who signed him for £100m in 2021. He helped City win the 2022-23 Treble and is under contract until the end of this season. In his first Everton loan spell, he scored twice in 22 appearances before injury cut the season short. He returned on loan this season and had made six appearances before falling out of favour.
