Newcastle were booed off at St James’ Park after losing 1-0 to Everton, their second defeat by the same opponents in a week. The result leaves Matthias Jaissle’s side with four defeats in six Premier League matches, three months into the German manager’s four-year contract.
Thierno Barry scored Everton’s winner after goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek let a routine effort slip beneath him. Substitute Jacob Ramsey was also sent off, while Newcastle managed only two shots on target from 17 attempts. Jaissle argued that a foul on Fabian Schar in the build-up should have ruled out the goal, but acknowledged his team had not done enough to earn a win.
“After a performance like that I can understand the reaction from the fans,” Jaissle said, adding that he was responsible for the team’s display. He also described Newcastle as short of confidence and said they had been too hesitant in possession, relying on too many long passes.
The defeat extended Newcastle’s poor home record. They have lost seven league matches at home in 2026 and have gone 14 consecutive home league games without a clean sheet, their longest such run. They have scored 12 goals in nine league fixtures, and have found the net only once in their last 47 shots across all competitions.
Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports that he feared for Newcastle, describing the team’s home performances as flat. Captain Dan Burn also recognised the tension among supporters, saying the side had not been clinical enough in attack or reliable when defending their own penalty area.
Newcastle, who sit in the bottom half with 11 points from nine games, visit Fulham on Saturday in their final match before the November international break. They are then due to host Arsenal and travel to Brighton when the league resumes. Jaissle said the team would review the performance and work together to improve.
