Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett is expected to move from the Arizona Cardinals to the Baltimore Ravens, according to a source with knowledge of the situation who spoke to the Associated Press on Wednesday. The individual requested anonymity as the transaction has not yet been finalized.
The potential acquisition comes as the Ravens face a severe shortage at the quarterback position. Star player Lamar Jackson is out indefinitely following surgery on his right thumb, while backup Tyler Huntley is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a turf toe injury. With the team sitting at a 4-4 record, they urgently needed reinforcements.
In the immediate term, undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano is scheduled to start for Baltimore against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. However, if the trade with Arizona proceeds, Brissett is likely to take over as the starter for the upcoming game against the Chargers on November 15.
Brissett, 33, has started eight games for the Cardinals this season but was recently demoted to third-string after Gardner Minshew led a comeback victory in Dallas. Over his 11-year career with New England, Indianapolis, Miami, Cleveland, Washington, and Arizona, he holds a record of 23-50 as a starter. Originally drafted by the Patriots in 2016 to back up Tom Brady, Brissett has completed 63.3% of his passes this year, accumulating 1,719 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
