West Ham have appointed former midfielder Scott Parker as head coach, replacing Nuno Espírito Santo, who was dismissed on Tuesday. Parker has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract as the club sit eighth in the Championship.

His first match is scheduled to be away to Cardiff on Wednesday. West Ham are looking to turn around their form after losing their previous two games, including a home defeat to West Brom last Saturday.

The 46-year-old has overseen three promotions to the Premier League, with Burnley, Bournemouth and Fulham. He had been out of work since leaving Burnley after the club’s relegation from the top flight last April.

Parker made 129 appearances for West Ham between 2007 and 2011. He described returning as a proud moment, saying the club and its supporters had a special place in his life and family’s memories.
