West Ham United have appointed former midfielder Scott Parker as head coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract. He replaces Nuno Espirito Santo, who was dismissed on Tuesday following the club’s disappointing start to the Championship season.

Parker, 46, has previously guided Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley to promotion from the Championship. He has been without a club since leaving Burnley in April after the team was relegated from the Premier League.

His first match in charge will be Wednesday’s Championship trip to Cardiff City. First-team coaches Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine will assist him, while sporting director Mark Noble, Parker’s former team-mate, will work closely with the new head coach. West Ham said it would announce further details about the backroom staff in the coming days and weeks.

Parker said he was proud to return to a club with a special place in his and his family’s lives. He also described the opportunity to lead West Ham and pursue a return to the Premier League as one he felt privileged and excited to take on.
