Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini said a penalty gave Manchester United a major boost in their 3-2 Champions League win, after Roma had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half.

“It was a different match compared with the one against Real,” Gasperini said. “Here, the penalty gave them great momentum.” He added that Roma lacked the strength to cope with United’s attackers and struggled to contain the team’s surge, which he said the penalty had amplified.

Despite the defeat at Old Trafford, Gasperini said the experience could help Roma in the future. “This is a match that will serve us more than the others,” he said.
