Kimi Antonelli has become the youngest driver to win the Formula 1 world championship. The 20-year-old Italian secured the title in Mexico at the age of 20 years and 68 days, completing a season he described as incredible.
Antonelli celebrated the achievement in tears after the chequered flag before running to embrace his mother Veronica, his father Marco and his younger sister Maggie. He credited both Mercedes and his family for helping him reach the world championship.
“I’m happy we made it,” Antonelli said after the race. He also highlighted the significance of sharing the podium with champions such as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, while thanking the Mexican fans and promising to continue working to raise Italy’s profile in Formula 1.
Max Verstappen, who won the race in Mexico, congratulated Antonelli on the track, while Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was also visibly emotional. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the victory a source of national pride, praising the driver’s talent, commitment, determination and dedication.
The celebrations included the playing of “Nessun dorma” by Luciano Pavarotti and “Sarà perché ti amo” by Ricchi e Poveri on the podium. Tennis player Jannik Sinner also sent Antonelli a video message congratulating him on winning his first world title.
Antonelli’s father said his son had already demonstrated his potential during his debut season, particularly by responding well to difficult moments. Tributes also came from international media and former motorcycle champion Valentino Rossi, who described Antonelli as mature, responsible and capable of winning more championships.
