Just hours after making history in Mexico City, Kimi Antonelli spoke about his Formula 1 title, his plans for the future and the decision to continue racing with number 12 rather than adopt the number one reserved for the world champion.

“Staying with 12 is a way for me to keep my feet on the ground,” Antonelli told Sky. He described the number as a new starting point, allowing him to rebuild, improve and remain focused on the next season.

The Mercedes driver said he was only beginning to fully understand what he had achieved. He recalled becoming emotional during the final lap, when tears made it difficult to see the track. Sharing the moment with his family, team and friends made the achievement even more special, he said.

Antonelli also spoke about his admiration for Ayrton Senna, whom he considers a lasting source of inspiration both as a driver and as a person. During the season, he said, he watched many of Senna’s interviews to study how the Brazilian approached races and an entire campaign. Alongside his family, Senna will always remain a point of reference for him.

The Italian also highlighted the significance of sharing the podium with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. He said he plans to frame a photograph from the occasion and put it on the wall at home, calling it the kind of moment that stays with a person for life.

Reflecting on his role as an example for younger drivers, Antonelli said the most important lesson he had learned was to remain true to himself, regardless of success or surroundings. He also praised the Mercedes staff whose work, he noted, is largely unseen by the public but was essential to reaching the championship goal.

Asked when he began to believe the title was possible, Antonelli pointed to the period after Monza. He said the team had enjoyed an extraordinary and consistent season, while stressing that several races still remained and that Mercedes would aim to finish strongly ahead of 2027.

Comparing the championship with obtaining his driving licence and diploma, Antonelli said winning the Formula 1 world title was by far the most difficult. The emotional pressure of the championship weekend, he added, had been intense, but he was delighted that the team had achieved its goal.
