Point Of Law, a horse previously owned by King Charles, has won Australia’s Melbourne Cup, the country’s most prestigious race. Australian jockey Ethan Brown rode the horse to victory after moving it from the middle of the field to the front with a few hundred metres remaining.
Point Of Law was sold by the King earlier this year for an undisclosed sum and had been considered an early favourite. Brown said he had focused on staying calm and patient as he pursued Royal Supremacy on the home straight, making up a deficit of around a dozen lengths.
“Don’t wake me up,” Brown said in a post-race interview.
First run in 1861, the Melbourne Cup is often called the “race that stops a nation”. Its prize money is A$10.2 million, making it Australia’s third-richest race.
