Paolo Zanetti has called on Udinese to rebuild their mentality after taking over from Kosta Runjaic. Speaking at his presentation to the press, the new coach said the squad had significant potential but needed to respond through hard work and commitment.

“With me, those who run and deserve it will play,” Zanetti said, stressing that a lack of heart would make it difficult to achieve results. He identified the away match against Venezia on Friday, his former team, as the start of the challenge ahead.

Zanetti said he did not intend to overhaul the team’s existing approach, adding that he respected Runjaic and the work he had done. However, he pointed to Udinese’s position near the bottom of the table as evidence that the team had to improve. He believes the side can avoid relegation if it raises its level of performance.

After initial conversations with the players, Zanetti said he had not found anyone unwilling to help turn the situation around. He did, however, see a need to restore confidence and a sense of belonging, noting that a run of defeats can lead to uncertainty and blame-shifting.

The coach plans to keep the team’s tactical options largely intact at first, using either a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-2-1 formation. He said the players’ performances would determine selection and that the team must function collectively for individual talent to make a difference.

Zanetti also disclosed that he had signed an eight-month contract without a renewal option, saying he wanted to focus on proving what he and the players could achieve. He added that Udinese owed its supporters stronger performances and said the team would need to earn their connection through its effort on the pitch.
