Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich were level in their Champions League match on Tuesday, the fourth round of the league phase. Both teams entered the game needing a win to strengthen their hopes of finishing among the top eight and securing direct qualification for the round of 16.

Sorloth was the main change in Simeone’s lineup, starting ahead of Jonathan David and Ademola Lookman. Atlético’s team included Jan Oblak, Marcos Llorente, Dávid Hancko, Marc Pubill, Grimaldo, Pablo Barrios, Álex Baena, Giuliano Simeone, Julián Álvarez and Sorloth. Hancko and Le Normand were expected to form the central defensive partnership after Cuti Romero dropped out of the squad.

Bayern named Manuel Neuer in goal, with Laimer, Upamecano, Tah and Stanisic in defence. Kimmich and Bischof were selected in midfield, while Karl, Olise, Davies and Kane made up the attack. Davies started on the left and Karl on the right as the German side dealt with the absences of Saibari and Gnabry.

Atlético came into the match after a win against Manchester United, a draw with Stuttgart and a defeat to Liverpool. Bayern had five points. Before kickoff, the Metropolitano observed a minute’s silence for Jesús de Miguel and the victims of the train accident in Urda. The Champions League anthem was not played in tribute to De Miguel, a CD Tenerife player who had died that morning.
