Elena Rybakina, currently ranked as the world's No. 1 player and the top seed at the Pan Pacific Open, withdrew from her scheduled quarterfinal match on Friday. The decision was made due to an undisclosed injury, resulting in a walkover victory for Canada's Leylah Fernandez.
Rybakina appeared on the court in Tokyo to inform fans of her withdrawal personally. She explained that she had been dealing with a minor injury for several days and emphasized the need to be fully prepared for the upcoming WTA finals in Indian Wells, California, scheduled for next month. Concluding her address, she expressed hope to return to the tournament next year.
Despite this setback, Rybakina secured her position as the year-end world No. 1 following her victory over Yulia Putintseva on Thursday. The withdrawal leaves Fernandez to face Kamilla Rakhimova in the semifinals. Rakhimova advanced after defeating Maya Joint with a score of 7-5, 5-7, 6-1.
In other quarterfinal action, Slovakia's Mia Pohankova, an 18-year-old wild-card entry who recently turned 18, defeated Alycia Parks 7-6 (3), 6-3. Pohankova will face the winner of the late quarterfinal match between third-seeded Diana Shnaider and eighth-seeded Alex Eala to determine her semifinal opponent.
