Archie Brown says his move from English youth football to Fenerbahce was an “unorthodox” path shaped by a desire to gain first-team experience and grow beyond his familiar surroundings. The 24-year-old is preparing to face Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday in Istanbul.
Born in Birmingham, Brown began his youth career at West Brom before joining Derby. He helped Derby win a youth top-flight title and scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 final victory over an Arsenal Under-18 side featuring Bukayo Saka.
Frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities, Brown left England for Swiss club Lausanne Sport in 2021, aged 19. He said he was concerned about talented young players remaining on the fringes of senior teams without gaining substantial experience, and wanted to learn a new language and experience another culture. He moved to Belgian side Gent in 2023, then joined Fenerbahce in a £7m deal in 2025.
Brown, who can play at left-back, centre-back and in midfield, expects Liverpool to face a demanding atmosphere at Fenerbahce’s 48,000-capacity Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. He said the noise can make communication between teammates difficult, particularly when the home side is defending, and described match nights in Kadikoy as special.
The build-up comes after Brown was sent off following a post-match altercation with Galatasaray last Monday. Galatasaray accused him of physically attacking captain Abdulkerim Bardakci, and Brown received a three-match ban; Bardakci was suspended for two games.
Brown called the incident a lesson, saying the derby’s intensity had contributed to a moment he regretted. He said it was his first red card and that he was disappointed to be suspended when his priority was supporting his teammates.
The former England youth international says he enjoys the freedom his role gives him and wants to entertain Fenerbahce supporters. He scored the club’s first Champions League goal in 18 years during a draw against Roma this season.
Interim Fenerbahce boss Dirk Kuyt has described the Liverpool match as an opportunity for his side to show what it can do in Europe. Brown said he was excited to test himself against Liverpool’s players, adding that nights like this are what footballers play for.
