Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has died after being injured in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match on Monday. His condition was initially described as stable but serious before it deteriorated on Tuesday morning. He died at 07:00 GMT, the report said.
A minute’s silence was observed before Tuesday’s Champions League matches. Similar tributes are planned for Wednesday’s fixtures and this week’s Europa League and Conference League games. Supporters also laid flowers and lit candles beneath an image of De Miguel at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López.
Tenerife announced six official days of mourning, during which the club’s activities will be suspended. Players, staff and officials will attend De Miguel’s funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo. The club said its stadium would open on Saturday evening so supporters could pay their respects.
The incident happened seven minutes into stoppage time, with the match level at 2-2. Owono ran towards the centre circle to clear a long ball, and his knee appeared to strike De Miguel. The striker was treated on the pitch and taken by ambulance to hospital. The referee sent Owono off before abandoning the match.
Reuters reported that Spanish police had opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter. Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui told news agency EFE that criminal proceedings were “very unlikely.”
Tributes came from across football and beyond. Real Madrid manager José Mourinho described the incident as shocking and said it would be an extremely difficult moment for Owono, as well as for De Miguel’s family and friends. Barcelona forward Raphinha also sent condolences to the family, while Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Nadal shared messages of support.
Tenerife supporters and teammates remembered De Miguel for his commitment and character. The club said his family was grateful for the messages but asked for privacy. De Miguel joined Tenerife from Castellón in the summer of 2025 and helped the team earn promotion to the second division.
