The Segunda División match between Granada and Tenerife has been postponed following the death of Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel, Granada announced on Wednesday. The game, part of the 13th round of LaLiga Hypermotion, had been scheduled for Saturday, November 7, at Nuevo Los Cármenes.

Tenerife asked LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation to postpone the fixture so the squad could pay tribute to their teammate. Granada supported the request and expressed its condolences to De Miguel’s loved ones and the Tenerife club.

A memorial and farewell ceremony for De Miguel is due to take place at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium on Saturday at 6 p.m. local time. The Granada–Tenerife game had been set for 9 p.m. that day. Tenerife’s majority shareholder, Rayco García, said the players were not ready to play and that the club would like to return to league action on November 14, when it is scheduled to host Ceuta.

De Miguel, 30, died at Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria Hospital after suffering a heavy impact in the closing minutes of Tenerife’s match against Andorra on Monday, November 2. The fixture was part of the 12th round of the competition.

Spain’s National Police has opened an investigation into the death, which is under judicial supervision, according to sources cited by EFE. The chief prosecutor in Santa Cruz de Tenerife said a criminal case appeared unlikely because the impact occurred during a normal incident of play, while noting that the sports disciplinary committee’s findings are still awaited. De Miguel’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday in Navahermosa, Toledo, where his family is from and where he will be buried.
