James Penrice’s impressive start at Rangers has strengthened manager Derek McInnes’s desire to secure the left-back on a permanent deal. The 27-year-old was named in Scotland’s squad for this month’s Nations League double-header after helping Rangers reach the League Cup final and extend their unbeaten domestic run to 12 matches.
Penrice joined Rangers on loan from AEK Athens and made an immediate impact, scoring and assisting in a 5-1 win over St Mirren in his first appearance of the season. He later set up the only goal in Saturday’s semi-final victory over Aberdeen, sending Rangers into December’s final against Hibernian.
His loan agreement includes an option to buy. McInnes said the club would ideally have signed Penrice permanently from the outset, but a loan was the best option at the time. He added that Rangers understand what is required to complete a permanent transfer and that there is goodwill between the parties.
Penrice has also shown his versatility, playing in midfield during Rangers’ 3-0 League Cup win over Celtic at Ibrox. McInnes praised his quality, energy and enthusiasm, saying the player has earned the trust of both the coaching staff and supporters.
The Scotland call-up is the first of Penrice’s career. McInnes said the recognition was no surprise given his current form and praised the hunger that has driven the defender’s progress. He added that he hopes Penrice will get the chance to make his international debut.
