Paula Badosa’s season appeared to end in Hong Kong after she retired from her opening match against Elena Pridankina. The Spaniard had been leading 4-1 in the first set, but Pridankina fought back to take it 7-5.
Before the second set, Badosa requested medical assistance. Staff checked her blood pressure and vital signs, and she was treated while visibly emotional before retiring shortly afterwards.
The episode came less than a week after Badosa experienced similar problems, including heatstroke, during her defeat to Harriet Dart at the Guangzhou Open.
Badosa, a former world No. 2 and Australian Open semi-finalist, has dealt with injuries and form struggles in recent years. She fell outside the world’s top 100 earlier this year but had climbed back to No. 56 in the rankings.
In May 2025, Badosa said she had accepted that she might retire young, citing ongoing back problems. She said she would keep trying to play for as long as she could manage her condition.
