Just eight days after their Round of 16 encounter at the Ningbo Open, Alex Eala and Diana Shnaider renewed their rivalry in a tightly contested quarterfinal showdown in Tokyo that ultimately favored the Russian. The Filipina ace saw her tournament run conclude on Friday afternoon Philippine time following a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6(5), 4-6 defeat against the third-seeded Shnaider.
Shnaider initially looked poised to seize early control, holding serve in the opening game and generating three break-point opportunities in the second. However, Eala held her nerve, stringing together five consecutive points with a sharper serve to neutralize the threat. The world No. 19 quickly turned defense into offense, using her backhand to dictate rallies and secure the first break of the match in the third game for a 2-1 lead. After backing up the break with a solid hold, Eala broke Shnaider again in the fifth game and held comfortably in the sixth to extend her advantage to 5-1. Although Shnaider briefly interrupted Eala's five-game winning streak, the Filipina held serve in the eighth game to close out the opening set 6-2.
Eala dominated the return game in the first set, outplaying Shnaider 11-5 on first-serve return points won. Her ability to neutralize the third seed's first delivery and convert defensive positions into attacking opportunities gave her a significant upper hand in the rallies. The second set proved much tighter, with both players holding serve through the first three games before Shnaider took an early 2-1 lead. Eala faced pressure in the fourth game, committing three double faults that allowed Shnaider to earn two break points, but the Filipina saved the game to level the set at 2-2.
Neither player found a breakthrough over the next three games, keeping the score locked at 4-4 after Eala fended off another two break-point challenges in the eighth game. In the ninth game, Eala pushed Shnaider into an extended battle, earning four break points across six deuces. However, the Russian saved all four to hold serve for a 5-4 lead, denying Eala a chance to serve for the match. Both players protected their serves through the 12th game, sending the set into a tiebreak.
The tiebreak remained deadlocked at 5-5 before Shnaider capitalized on a costly double fault from Eala and followed it with an ace to take the point and force a deciding third set. The final set began with both players holding serve until Shnaider found her first break of the match in the third game, moving ahead 2-1. She extended her lead to 3-1 with another hold, putting Eala under pressure. Although Eala held in the fifth game, she subsequently called for a medical timeout to receive treatment on her ankle.
Both players continued to protect their serves throughout the deciding set, making Shnaider's lone break the difference despite Eala's late push in the 10th game. The Filipina's comeback bid ultimately fell short as the Russian held on to close out the match in two hours and 52 minutes. Eala will now look to bounce back in her final tournament of the season at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Tennis Open, which begins on November 2.
