Real Madrid announced on Wednesday that Rafael Nadal will be proposed as a new member of the club’s board. The appointment will be put to a vote at the general members’ meeting on November 21 and is expected to be approved, the Spanish club said in a statement.
Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion and lifelong Real Madrid supporter, has been an honorary member of the club since 2011. He thanked president Florentino Pérez and the board for the invitation in a social media message, saying he accepted with enthusiasm and a desire to learn and contribute.
The club said it was proud to welcome a figure whose sporting and personal qualities could contribute to Real Madrid’s present and future. It also praised Nadal’s talent, humility, perseverance and respect for opponents and teammates, describing those values as part of the club’s identity.
Nadal is the only tennis player to have won 14 Roland Garros titles. He has previously said he would not rule out becoming Real Madrid president one day, while noting that the role would require preparation and that he was unsure whether he would be suited to it.
