British teenager Mika Stojsavljevic claimed her first WTA Tour main-draw victory by defeating Sofia Kenin 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at the Hong Kong Open. The 17-year-old said she learned only an hour before the match that she would be playing.

Ranked 411th in the world, Stojsavljevic had lost in qualifying before entering the main draw as a lucky loser. She edged a close deciding set against Kenin, the former Australian Open champion, who is ranked 224 places higher.

Stojsavljevic said she went into the match and played freely, while also trusting her ability despite Kenin’s status as a Grand Slam winner. The Briton struck six winners and saved three of the eight break points she faced.

The win adds to a notable season for Stojsavljevic, who beat then-world number 56 Talia Gibson in Billie Jean King Cup qualifying in April. She won the US Open junior title in 2024, becoming the first British player in 15 years to do so, and turned professional in 2025.

Stojsavljevic will meet world number 67 Zeynep Sonmez in the second round in Hong Kong.
