Alex Eala missed the opportunity to achieve a career-high ranking after suffering a defeat against Diana Shnaider at the Pan Pacific Open. This marks the second consecutive tournament where the Filipina has fallen to the Russian player, who previously defeated her in two tight sets at the Ningbo Open last week.
Eala began the match strongly, hitting 14 winners against 10 unforced errors and successfully defending all three break points she faced. She secured the first set 6-2 in just 36 minutes. However, the momentum shifted in the second set, where both players earned break points but failed to capitalize immediately. Eala held multiple break point opportunities at 4-4 and served for the match, yet Shnaider held firm, forcing a tiebreak.
The second set proved grueling, lasting one hour and 23 minutes. In the tiebreak, the players traded mini-breaks until Shnaider, ranked world No. 13, served her second ace of the match to force a decider. Entering the third set, Shnaider converted her first break point to take a 2-1 lead. Eala, trailing 3-2, called for a trainer and received treatment on her right foot and ankle before a medical timeout was granted.
Despite battling through the injury, Eala could not overcome Shnaider's consistency in the final set. The match concluded with a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory for Shnaider after two hours and 53 minutes of play. Statistically, Shnaider converted only one of her nine break points, while Eala was successful in just two of her ten attempts.
As a result of reaching the quarter-finals, Eala earned £24,975 in prize money and 108 ranking points. A victory would have propelled the current world No. 18 to a career-high ranking of 16. Shnaider now moves up to 2,933 points, placing her just behind Iva Jovic at 12th, and will face Mia Pohankova in the semi-finals on Saturday.
Eala is scheduled to compete in Hong Kong next week for what would be the final tournament of her 2026 season. However, following the foot issue sustained during this match, it remains uncertain whether she will appear at the upcoming WTA 250 event.
