England have moved closer to exiting the Rugby League World Cup following a disorganized 34-12 victory over Papua New Guinea. Despite the win, the match was characterized by chaos and numerous mistakes that will likely prove insufficient for their qualification hopes. Since suffering an opening defeat to Tonga, England's strategy required them to win their remaining group games convincingly to reach the semi-finals.

The team initially appeared on track against France with a dominant 82-0 victory and started strongly against Papua New Guinea. Leading 22-0 after just 22 minutes thanks to tries from Matty Ashton, AJ Brimson, Dominic Young, and Harry Smith, England seemed poised to close the significant points deficit required to overtake Samoa. However, the momentum shifted negatively despite head coach Brian McDermott's pre-match instructions for his players to remain patient.

England repeatedly lost possession and conceded penalties, which revitalized the Papua New Guinea side. Dudley Dotoi and Gairo Voro scored tries for the Kumuls as England squandered their initiative. The match highlighted these struggles when centre Herbie Farnworth was stripped of the ball near the try line shortly before Mikey Lewis added a try to Morgan Knowles' second-half effort. In total, England committed 21 errors and achieved only a 57% completion rate, a performance level deemed inadequate for this stage of the tournament.

This display stood in stark contrast to their blueprint against France. Consequently, England can now only reach the last four if Tonga defeats Samoa by more than 46 points. Given that Kristian Woolf's side lost 34-6 to Samoa in Brisbane a year ago and has not beaten their neighbors since 2018, such an outcome appears highly improbable.
